Would you like to get better at playing your cello?
Then I have these 5 tips for you.

1. Plan je studiemomenten in je agenda.

Niets gaat vanzelf. Iedereen is druk en ook ik weet; ‘even de cello pakken’ gaat meestal over naar ‘even de was doen’. Plan je het in, dan houd je het vrij.
Althans, dat is aan jou 🙂

2. Leave your cello unpacked in your study space if possible.

For 5 minutes too! Mine is always on the piano. From my own experience I’ve found that I get it faster than when I have to take it ‘all the way’ out of the cello case. I often think: “Before I’m behind the cello I have to do something else”. So leave it unpacked in a corner of your room, next to your bed, on the piano or in the stand (guitar stands are really cheap).
But when it’s in the corner or on the piano you can even take out the tip and that saves another action.
And let’s face it, do you have a cello like me? It’s a picture, isn’t it? Let him (or her?) ‘shine’!

3. Make a nice pot of tea five minutes before you start.

.

You keep this on your chair! Playing cello is a treat; five minutes before your study moment is scheduled you get ready and that includes a nice pot of tea.
One time Edo de Waart, conductor, recommended that to me. I had a tight regime when I chose the cello and had to catch up a lot. Every morning at eight o’clock I get up, at five to nine I sit down with a pot of tea and at nine o’clock, no excuse, you’re ready behind the cello.

4. Provide variation in your study material.

Show ladder or arpeggio, etude, lecture piece and duet? You don’t feel the same for one day. After playing with a scale – how ZEN can it be – you ask yourself what makes you happy. Sometimes you want to give your best energy to a piece that is very difficult and sometimes you choose the easy way. Follow your feelings. And not only while playing the cello 🙂

5. Zon your desk always sets your long term goal.

What would you like to play in a year’s time? Okay, keep it achievable! No Schumann concert. But think of that one beautiful melody … I used to have a theme from the BBC series “The Buccaneers” on my desk for a while. I wanted to learn to play this. When I had the idea that I could grab all the positions it was so far and I worked for hours on this line, even on the first few bars I could sit for half an hour. By listening so well to the beginning and the end of your pranks you really get to know your own physique. Usually the trick for me was to relax. If I could relax I could hear the tone improve immediately. How about you?
